Vacancy Description

We are seeking a Finds Liaison Officer to work with the Archaeology and Museum teams at West Berkshire Council and with Berkshire Archaeology (the archaeological service for Windsor and Maidenhead, Reading, Bracknell Forest, Slough and Wokingham) to deliver the Portable Antiquities Scheme across Berkshire.

The aim of the Portable Antiquities Scheme is to record artefacts found by the public to advance our understanding of the past and increase opportunities for active public involvement in archaeology.  The Finds Liaison position is part funded by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport through the British Museum as well as by Berkshire Archaeology, and has benefitted from the kind support of Graham and Joanna Barker.

This is a key role for the protection, understanding and enjoyment of our local heritage. The Finds Liaison Officer will develop contacts with members of the public including metal-detector users, explain the aims of the Scheme and the Treasure Act, and identify, research and record finds on the Portable Antiquities Scheme's database.

This post will be based in the West Berkshire Museum in Newbury but you will also work at the Berkshire Record Office in Reading, and flexibly at other locations in Berkshire to make contact with finders.  You will have experience of artefact identification or finds recording and the ability to communicate with and enthuse a range of people.  Good organisational skills and the ability to produce accurate records and reports are also essential for this role.  Experience of engaging with clubs, groups, communities or parish councils to encourage people to enjoy and protect their local heritage is desirable.

West Berkshire Council offer excellent employment benefits such as flexible working, access to a wide range of relevant training, local government pension scheme, family friendly policies, a range of local discounts and much more. You will also be entitled to a generous annual leave entitlement of 27 days per annum rising to a maximum of 32 days.

This role has been identified as public facing in accordance with Part 7 of the Immigration Act 2017; the requirement to fulfil all spoken aspects of the role with confidence in English applies.

Please note that this is a Fixed Term position until 31/03/2021 (Funding Limited Project).
